Don't you think you're too old to start a new business?

A while ago, an amazing woman that I respect asked me if I thought I was too old to launch a new business. I almost fell over! Was she right?

This week I’m coming up on my 56th birthday – uhg. With age comes experience and confidence, and I realized that she may not understand now, why I had to reach for my dreams, but I’ll bet she will when she is 56. Because dreams change daily and morph into something you did not see coming. I started my dream business because I believe in following my dreams!

I’ve been lucky enough to be self employed for my 30-year career as a hair stylist. When I turned 50 I was ready to relax and work less. Then a crazy idea came to me… help people color their hair at home with salon color. Many years of research and testing later I founded Della Ricca Hair Color with shades manufactured in Italy!

I’ve always viewed my profession as a privilege. I get to meet interesting people and solve hair problems and hear personal stories everyday. However, I found a new challenge that I could not let go; I have to see where it may take me.

Everyday in my new business, I’m learning something new and solving problems, like how to get my website to work more efficiently. Or how to explain my business model effectively without scaring off hairdressers. I have no doubt in my vision and I know it will take time for this idea to spread like wildfire. I keep holding onto the fact that other women before me have launched later in life and succeeded: Vera Wang, Martha Stewart, and my favorite, Mary Kay. Plus a study by MIT found that the average age of entrepreneurs who founded high-growth companies is 45.

I can do this because life is always growing and evolving; when you stop, so does life.

As Elizabeth Taylor said, “You just do it. You force yourself to get up. You force yourself to put one foot in front of the other and goddamn it, you refuse to let it get to you. You fight. You cry. You curse. Then you go about the business of living. That’s how I’ve done it. There’s no other way.”

Thank you for your time,

Karen Anne Jacks
